President Obama, please:
Civil Unions for All (No Government-Recognized Marriage)

Talking points helpful to endorsers

I gave up on marriage in my teens. I find the idea of dyads appalling. Many people find any one other person quite unbearable after some time. Separate church and state, and let people join in any union they want. If I want to marry ten people, does that hurt you? Get your dualistic “marriage” at the MCC, and get over your mimicry of the straight world.

Lets call this what it is, appeasing religious groups by instituting policies of discrimination based on sexual orientation. America should not pride itself upon such discrimination, and Americans should fight for equality now just as they have risen up to do so in the past. We need not regress in order to create “compromise”; we need to progress to create true equality both culturally and legally

After listening to all this, I think that perhaps this might be the right tactic, at least for the feds. The states are the ones who register marriages, and if they want to call it Civil Unions when couples of the same sex get together – so be it, but this will go on forever.

The problem here is not that these people want to marry each other. If they want to enter into any kind of contract that would ordinarily be legal, they should be able to, but they upset the mores of the large religious right. I personally dont care what they do and I am not threatened by them wanting to interact with each other. Then it will be up to the ministers whether to marry them. But what will happen then? Will Gay groups sue Churches that refuse to agree with them? Are Gays looking for Permission or Vindication? I wish they would be quiet and quit distracting America from more important issues. I’m starting to think that the whole homesexual issue is just a cry for attention.

If you’re talking about gay rights (DADT, marriage equality, etc). I have to respectfully disagree. Fighting for human rights is not a distraction. You can’t blame gays for trying to finally get some fair treatment, since they have a rare opportunity with a Democratic president & congressional majority. You have to actively fight for civil rights, the establishment never just hands them over. Even MLK got pressured by the Kennedy’s to quit pressuring them for civil rights, but they eventually realized their mistake.

I guess I just wish they would get it over with. I dont want to deprive anyone from the rights to live a fair and equal life. I guess that I just dont have an axe to grind on this issue and all the noise is distracting.

I agree it’s ridiculous it’s taking so long. I wish we could sort it out in a day and move on.
